My Teaching Philosophy
My philosophy is simple, learning is a life-long journey.
I set out on my own voyage many years ago, sparked by teachers that made learning so real, I had to know more. To this day they, and their lessons, are unforgettable. Was it my 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Halsey, who gifted me with a tiny book and said I could accomplish anything - do you think she told every student that they were her favorite? Or, was it my 10th grade Social Studies teacher who shared a suspense filled story of a young soldier on a secret mission who discovered he'd been flying on the B-29 decoy plane of the infamous Enola Gay; Mr. George, who as it turned out, was that young soldier. Or perhaps it was Mr. Smith, my 11th grade Aeronautics teacher. On the first day of class, he carefully demonstrated a beautiful model airplane and then "flew" it across the room, shattering it into a hundred pieces: "That, ladies and gentlemen, is what you want to avoid; welcome to Aeronautics". These teachers, and many more, made a difference in my life. It is my goal to light the path for students as they did for me; to make learning real, to have a little fun and create a lasting memory. My spinner hubcap may have been a little crazy, but my students understood rotational symmetry. So, as it turns out, my teaching philosophy is the same as my life philosophy; Learn something everyday for knowledge is not a destination, but a journey. Bring a camera, bring a friend, bring your curiosity, and let's get ready to have some fun! |
